Media walls and fireplace built-ins
The fireplace wall is usually the biggest wall in the house, and in many Las Vegas homes it's the most dated. JB Custom Design turns it into the room's centrepiece: cabinetry either side, a mantel, lit shelves and a place for the TV that looks intended.
Judy's media walls range from MDF shiplap with a 9′ box mantel to full-height stacked stone, Calacatta porcelain with a floating hazelnut cabinet, and a fluted den wall built for the kids.

What's included
Fireplace surrounds and mantels
Shiplap, stone, porcelain tile and box mantels, with the fireplace face redone to match.
Media cabinets
Floating or full-height cabinets with room for equipment and the clutter that comes with it.
Shelving and lighting
Floating shelves, puck lights, LED strips and backlit niches built in.
Opening up a dated wall
A boxed-in fireplace wall opened into a modern media wall, or a room divider that keeps two rooms in view.
How it works
- A 90-minute in-home meeting about style, budget and time frame.
- Creative visuals, materials and colours chosen together, timeline and budget set.
- A clear, itemized scope with material and labor broken out.
- The build, with trades and vendors properly vetted and clear communication throughout.
Wiring and permits
New outlets or circuits for a TV or lighting need a permit in the City of Las Vegas, and plumbing and electrical work must be done by licensed tradespeople (or by homeowners on their own homes). Judy plans the media wall with that work in mind, so the right trades are booked in the right order.
Media walls and fireplaces: questions homeowners ask
Can a TV go above a fireplace?
Often, yes, but it depends on the fireplace, the heat it gives off and the viewing height. Judy looks at the specific fireplace and room during the in-home meeting and designs the wall around what works for it.
Do I need a permit for a media wall?
Building the cabinets and shelves is finish work, but in the City of Las Vegas running new wiring for an outlet or light fixture needs a permit. Electrical work must be done by a licensed electrician or by the homeowner on their own home. Henderson and Clark County have their own building departments.
What materials do you use for fireplace walls?
Projects include MDF shiplap with a 9′ box mantel and puck lighting, full-height stacked stone with a wood-framed TV, Calacatta Oro porcelain with a floating hazelnut-stained cabinet, and fluted wall panels.
Can you update a fireplace without replacing it?
Yes. Many projects keep the fireplace unit and change everything around it: the surround, the mantel, the cabinets either side and the lighting.
